Everyone deals with uncertainties, but for Virtual Assistants, the ‘what ifs’ can feel paralyzing. What if the client doesn’t pay? What if the project flops? What if I’m not good enough? The fear of the unknown is a constant companion in the freelance world, isn’t it?
Why do the ‘what ifs’ carry so much weight?
On one hand, they’re natural. As humans, we’re wired to predict and prepare for worst-case scenarios. It’s a survival instinct. But on the other hand, the freelance lifestyle amplifies these fears. There’s no safety net, no HR department, no guaranteed paycheck. You’re on your own, and that’s terrifying.
Types of ‘What Ifs’:
Solvable: Practical concerns like payment issues or scope creep. For example, “What if the client ghosts me?”
Action: Use contracts, deposits, and clear communication to mitigate.
Unsolvable: Existential fears rooted in self-doubt or perfectionism. For example, “What if this client hates my work?” or “What if I’m not cut out for this?”
Action: Reframe and focus on learning opportunities rather than failures.
Steps to Manage the ‘What Ifs’:
Acceptance: Acknowledge that uncertainty is part of the job.
Reframe: Shift from fear-based questions to growth-focused ones.
Take Action: Address fears with deliberate steps (e.g., skill-building, feedback).
Still, some ‘what ifs’ linger. The big existential ones. “What if this whole career path is a mistake?” or “What if I never find stability?” These are heavier, and they require deeper reflection. Are these fears pointing to real issues that need addressing, or are they just noise? That’s a tough call. Sometimes, the answer isn’t clear until you’ve lived through it.
The ‘what ifs’ are a constant, but they don’t have to control you. A balanced approach—acknowledging, reframing, and acting—can turn fear into growth. Remember, fear thrives in inaction. The best way to quiet the ‘what ifs’ is to keep moving forward.
