Picture a boxing ring, with a coach standing ready to wipe your brow and give you water between rounds. But life, especially professional life, isn’t always so cinematic. If we pause for a moment, the question becomes a lot deeper—and maybe even a little uncomfortable.
First, let’s consider what “in your corner” even means. Does it mean support? Encouragement? Advocacy? And who qualifies? Are we talking about family? Friends? Mentors? Or is this about colleagues, clients, and collaborators? Maybe it’s all of the above, or maybe it’s none.
Here’s the tricky part: support looks different depending on what you’re doing and where you are in life. As a Virtual Assistant (VA), for instance, your needs might range from emotional support (someone to remind you you’re doing great when imposter syndrome hits) to practical support (someone to refer you to new clients or critique your workflow).
But let’s flip this around. When we say someone is “in your corner,” what are we expecting from them? And what are we giving in return? Support isn’t a one-way street, after all. If you want people in your corner, you also need to be in theirs. Are you showing up for others in the same way you wish they’d show up for you?
And then there’s the hard question: What if no one’s really in your corner right now? That’s a terrifying thought, but one worth examining. Are you isolated because you’ve outgrown your old network and haven’t built a new one? Or is it because you’ve been so focused on work that you’ve neglected the relationships that matter?
Let’s also talk about boundaries. Sometimes, the people you think are in your corner—friends, family, even long-time colleagues—might not actually be the best allies for your professional journey. They might offer advice that’s well-intentioned but misinformed. Or worse, they might subconsciously hold you back, projecting their fears and doubts onto your path.
So, how do you identify who’s really in your corner? Maybe it starts with noticing the small things:
Who celebrates your wins without jealousy?
Who tells you the truth, even when it’s uncomfortable?
Who checks in—not because they need something, but because they care?
Now comes the hardest part: building your corner. If you feel like your current support system isn’t enough, what do you do? Networking sounds like such a cliché answer, but it’s less about networking and more about connecting. It’s about reaching out to people you admire, even if it feels awkward. It’s about joining a community of like-minded professionals, or even hiring a coach or mentor.
And what if your corner is already full? Then it’s time to nurture it. Relationships, like anything valuable, require care and maintenance. Show up for your people. Be generous with your time and expertise. And don’t take their support for granted—gratitude goes a long way.
Finally, let’s circle back to the original question: “Who’s in your corner?” If you can answer confidently, you’re already ahead. If not, that’s okay too—it’s never too late to start building. The important thing is recognizing that no one succeeds alone, and finding your corner isn’t just about asking for help—it’s about giving it too.
Your success isn’t just about what you can do—it’s also about who’s supporting you. Build a corner of people who uplift you, challenge you, and believe in your potential. And remember: the best way to have people in your corner is to be in theirs too.
