Surviving in the VA world—or in any freelance field—often looks like hustling for the next gig, saying yes to every opportunity, and operating in a reactive state.
Bills are due, expenses pile up, and the allure of "quick cash" dominates decision-making. It’s understandable. Everyone needs stability, and survival isn’t inherently bad. But is it sustainable?
Building a career, on the other hand, feels like a more deliberate, thoughtful process. It’s about long-term vision, intentional choices, and creating something that grows in value over time. It’s about planting seeds today for the harvest you want tomorrow.
But here’s where I get stuck: how do you know if you’re truly building a career or just moving from one "next step" to another without a cohesive plan?
Maybe the distinction lies in mindset. Survival mode is about today: what do I need to do right now to get through this week, this month, or this project? Career-building mode asks a different question: where do I want to be in five years, and how does today’s work align with that vision?
But there’s a trap here. Sometimes, survival mode feels like the only option. If you’re overwhelmed with financial pressures, isn’t it irresponsible to focus on long-term goals? And yet, if you never carve out space for future planning, you might find yourself in an endless loop of survival. How do you escape that?
Here’s another layer to consider: what does career-building actually look like for a VA? It’s not the same as climbing the corporate ladder or pursuing traditional education. For a VA, career-building might mean:
Choosing a niche that excites you and aligns with your skills.
Building a personal brand that attracts ideal clients.
Learning how to say "no" to opportunities that don’t fit your goals.
Investing in skills or tools that make you more effective.
And yet, I’m nagged by the thought that career-building doesn’t have to be this linear or rigid. Can’t survival sometimes lead to opportunities for growth? Maybe the two modes—survival and career-building—aren’t opposites but part of a spectrum. You might start in survival mode but, with intentionality, transition toward building something more stable and fulfilling.
But here’s the real kicker: what if survival mode feels safer than career-building? Because let’s be honest—building a career involves risk. You might turn down a quick-paying gig to focus on securing a better long-term client. You might invest time in developing a service that doesn’t pay off immediately. And risk, by its very nature, is scary.
So how do you balance survival and career-building? Maybe the answer is to start small. Instead of a sweeping, long-term plan, begin with micro-decisions:
And perhaps the most important question is this: are you running your business, or is your business running you? If it’s the latter, that’s a sign you might be stuck in survival mode.
Survival Mode vs. Career-Building
Survival Mode: Reactive, focused on immediate needs, taking any client or project to meet financial demands.
Career-Building: Proactive, intentional, aligning today’s choices with long-term goals.
Mindset Shift
Survival mode asks: "What do I need to do today to get by?"
Career-building asks: "Where do I want to be in five years, and how does this decision get me closer?"
Signs You’re Just Surviving
You’re constantly saying yes to projects you don’t enjoy.
You feel burnt out but can’t afford to take a break.
You have no clear plan for where your business is headed.
Steps Toward Career-Building
Choose a Niche: Focus on an area that excites you and aligns with your strengths.
Build Your Brand: Create a presence that attracts ideal clients and sets you apart.
Invest in Growth: Take courses, learn tools, or network to expand your opportunities.
The Balance
You don’t have to choose survival or career-building—it’s a spectrum. Start small by carving out time for future-focused actions while meeting your current needs.
The Risk of Staying in Survival Mode
Short-term focus might lead to burnout and stagnation. Career-building involves risk, but it’s the path to stability and fulfillment.
Micro-Decisions That Matter
Spend one hour a week refining your services or learning a new skill.
Say no to one low-paying project and use that time for long-term growth.
Create a small, actionable plan for the next six months.
Building a career doesn’t mean abandoning survival mode overnight. It’s about shifting your focus—bit by bit—toward something bigger than today’s to-do list. Surviving is about reacting to what life throws at you. Building a career is about taking control, even in small ways, and shaping the future you want.
So, ask yourself: are you just surviving, or are you taking steps—no matter how small—toward something greater?
