Why do people want to work with their friends in the first place? The reasons are obvious—there’s already trust, a shared sense of humor, mutual understanding, and perhaps even a desire to help each other grow. It sounds ideal. After all, who wouldn’t want to build a career or business alongside someone they genuinely like?

But here’s the thing: friendship operates on a different set of rules than professional relationships. Friendships thrive on flexibility, empathy, and the assumption that mistakes or disagreements won’t permanently damage the bond. Professional relationships, however, often require boundaries, accountability, and, sometimes, difficult conversations that might feel out of place in a friendship.

Here’s where it starts to get complicated. When you blur the line between friend and colleague, which rulebook takes precedence? Do you give your friend the benefit of the doubt when they miss deadlines because “life got in the way,” or do you treat it as you would with any other collaborator and hold them accountable? Either choice can feel wrong: enforcing boundaries risks harming the friendship, while ignoring them risks harming the project.

Another layer to this is expectations. Friendships are inherently personal, while work is often transactional. When money, deadlines, or deliverables enter the picture, expectations shift. Suddenly, you’re not just two friends catching up over coffee—you’re collaborators, perhaps even employer and employee, navigating power dynamics that weren’t there before.

It gets trickier when problems arise. Let’s say your friend underdelivers on a task or, worse, completely flakes out. Do you confront them? If so, how do you ensure the conversation remains professional? And if you let it slide to preserve the friendship, what message does that send about your professionalism to others who might be observing?

On the flip side, what happens when you’re the one who falls short? Maybe you promised more than you could deliver, or maybe your friend’s expectations of you were unrealistic from the start. Friendships often rely on a deep sense of mutual respect. If one of you starts to see the other as less competent, less reliable, or even less honest, it can unravel the entire foundation of your relationship.

Then there’s the financial dynamic. Let’s be honest—money changes everything. Whether you’re paying your friend, or they’re paying you, there’s an unspoken tension. How much is too much to charge? Should you offer a discount because they’re your friend? And if you do, does that discount subtly devalue your work in their eyes?

Finally, let’s consider an often-overlooked factor: longevity. Friendships, especially long-term ones, are built to endure the ups and downs of life. Work partnerships, on the other hand, are often situational. They exist for as long as both parties are aligned in their goals and contributions. When the work relationship ends—as it often does—what happens to the friendship? Does it survive, or does it become collateral damage?

So, is working with friends doomed to fail? Not necessarily.

How to Make It Work (If You Must)

  • Discuss roles, responsibilities, and payment upfront.

  • Set boundaries and agree on how to handle conflicts.

  • Be prepared for the risks—and accept the consequences if it doesn’t work out.\

Ultimately, the question isn’t just can you work with friends? It’s should you? And that answer will depend on your priorities. If preserving the friendship is your top goal, working together might not be worth the risk. But if you’re both deeply aligned and willing to navigate the potential pitfalls, it could be one of the most rewarding collaborations you’ll ever experience.
